TEST LAB KIWA FINDS OUTSTANDING TEST RESULTS FOR 500 WP PV MODULE PROTOTYPE

26-01-2012 - Eindhoven, The Netherlands - For its innovative large and lightweight 500 Wp PV modules, TULiPPS Solar B.V. uses special 2-mm/0.08-inch fully tempered solar glass. Although half the thickness of glass typically used on conventional solar modules, this ultra-thin glass proved to be exceptionally durable.

A prototype 120-cell/500 Wp solar PV COSMOS module was subjected to the punishing Module Breakage Test and Hail Test by Kiwa N.V., an independent solar-module testing and certification organization. In the Module Breakage Test – a safety test which normally destroys a module during testing by hitting it with a 45 kg ball dropped from a height – our ultra-thin glass, composites-based module not only did NOT break despite 3 hits at the most severe impact height of 122 cm, but it retained 95% of its original electrical output even after that battering. Kiwa had never seen a module survive the test.

In the Hail Impact Test, our second module was repeatedly struck with 25 millimeters ice balls at impact energy that is 5x-higher than that used for certification testing. Not only did the glass not crack, but no underlying solar cells were damaged and the module retained 100% of its initial electrical output at the end of the test.

The outstanding break resistance that our modules demonstrated in these very challenging, international test protocols validated our decision to use premium-quality, ultra-thin 2-mm solar glass. You would expect glass this thin to be very fragile, but instead it performed beyond expectations. The unique combination of extra strength and ductility this glass provides is the perfect complement for our frameless automotive-grade composites-based support system. It shows that our new COSMOS modules are already setting new standards for lightweight, large and safe solar PV modules.
