TULiPPS Wins Solar Innovation Award for “Out-of-the-Box” Thinking
TULiPPS Solar B.V. won the 2012 Dutch Solar Innovation Awards in the Industrial Development category. Organized by Dutch Solar Magazine, the Dutch Solar Awards is a juried competition designed to showcase the best of the Netherlands’ solar energy sector by recognizing innovation in several awards categories. The Industry Development category recognizes a company that excels in achieving an industrial innovation (realized in calendar year 2011) that advances the progress of industry and the solar market on a global scale.

In awarding TULiPPS with its prestigious award, Jury President, Prof. Dr. Wim Sinke, who is also Program Development manager-Solar Energy at the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) as well as chairman of the European Photovoltaic Technology Platform said, “The jury selected TULiPPS Solar because the company ranked highest in a number of criteria. We were impressed by the owner, Paul Stassen’s incredible persistence in moving this company and its technology forward. He has put together a unique multidisciplinary consortium with a remarkable number of partners whose expertise in solar, roofing, glass, composites, and even automotive have helped TULiPPS completely redesign the solar module. They have designed a new product from scratch, but have used proven technology that exists today even if it’s not so well known or so visible in the solar industry, and it is broadly deployable. They are an excellent example of the kind of ‘out-of-the-box thinking’ that will move our industry forward.”

Changing How Solar Modules Are Built
Welcome to the world of TULiPPS Solar B.V., home of the next generation of solar photovoltaic (PV) module technology.
Representing the first major innovation in module technology in 4 decades, our unique COSMOS™ system reduces cost, weight, and installation time while increasing the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of roof-mounted and building-integrated solar PV arrays.
PV Module Technology that Boosts Efficiency While Lowering Costs
Over the last few decades, the PV industry has invested considerable time, effort, and resources improving the energy-generating efficiency of PV cells and reducing their manufacturing costs. However, traditional glass and aluminum-frame modules that house PV cells have not changed significantly in over 40 years, nor has their installation method because the industry is still using a separate metal support structure. Hence, a significant opportunity to reduce costs and weight has been left unexploited — until now!
Applying design, materials, and manufacturing efficiencies from the automotive composites industry, TULiPPS has developed its patent-pending COSMOS™ module technology with a frameless, integrated structural support system plus thin glass top. This versatile system can be used by any PV module manufacturer producing modules that utilize silicon or thin-film PV cell technologies with glass tops/fronts. By switching from conventional metal frames to our frameless composite system, PV module producers can reduce their systems costs, improve their design flexibility, and offer their own customers numerous benefits ranging from lower weight to much faster installation to higher energy-conversion efficiency.
Thanks to tough automotive-grade plastics and composites warranted to provide a 25+ year service life, this new module system offers a high level of parts integration plus plug-'n-play functionality that speeds assembly and installation. Since the systems are lighter and can be mounted flatter and closer to the building structure than conventional PV modules, heavy ballast is no longer needed to secure modules to the roof surface. Instead, a proven roof-anchor system that does not penetrate the roof membrane is used. Together, these innovative features help lower installation costs and time, and reduce the risk of post-installation roof leaks.
